Description: Thallus squamulose, heteromerous, brown, grey-brown or green-brown, dark green when wet. Squamules 0.3-0.7 mm wide, concave to flat, adpressed, sometimes imbricate, crenulate-lobulate; lower surface whitish to pale brown, erhizinate. Upper cortex pseudoparenchymatous; lower cortex absent; medulla white, of loosely interwoven hyphae. Perithecia black, globose to broadly pyriform, without involucrellum, immersed in the squamules, 0.13-0.2 mm across. Hymenium colourless, I+ red, K/I+ blue, with rounded, 2-3 μm wide hymenial algae; hamathecium of periphyses, interascal filaments absent. Asci 2-spored, clavate to cylindrical-clavate, bitunicate, with a fissitunicate dehiscence, thin-walled, the wall non-amyloid. Ascospores muriform, at first colourless, then pale brown, ellipsoid, often of different sizes in the same ascus, the largest ones 28-40(-50) x 12-20(-24) μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid (Diplosphaera), present in both thallus and hymenium. Spot tests: cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
