Flavoplaca polycarpa (A. Massal.) Arup, Frödén & Søchting
in Arup & al., Nord. J. Bot., 31: 46, 2013. Basionym: Callopisma aurantiacum var. polycarpum A. Massal. - Symmicta Lich.: 31, 1855.
Synonyms: Callopisma polycarpum (A. Massal.) A. Massal.; Caloplaca inconnexa var. verrucariarum Clauzade & Cl. Roux; Caloplaca polycarpa (A. Massal.) Zahlbr.; Caloplaca tenuatula f. athallina Clauzade & Cl. Roux nom. inval.; Caloplaca tenuatula subsp. verrucariarum (Clauzade & Cl. Roux) Clauzade & Cl. Roux
Description: Thallus crustose, thinly episubstratic, well-delimited, forming up to 2 cm wide, at first round, then irregular patches on the thalli of endolithic Bagliettoa-species, usually dark orange to grey-orange (orange-yellow in shade-forms), often thinly and indistinctly lobulate at margins, the lobules 0.1-0.3 mm wide, several patches tending to merge, covering much larger surfaces. Cortex para- or prosoplectenchymatous, of thin-walled cells; medulla thin, indistinct, I-. Apothecia frequent, scattered to crowded, immersed to adnate, 0.15-0.4 mm wide, with a flat to slightly convex, dark orange disc, and a more or less concolorous or slightly paler proper margin. Proper exciple of irregularly radiating, thick-walled hyphae; epithecium orange, granular, K+ purple-red; hymenium and hypothecium colourless; paraphyses usually simple, sometimes sparingly branched above, the upper cells enlarged. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, ellipsoid, 9-15 x (4-)5-8 μm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) 3-7 μm. Photobiont: chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus and apothecia K+ purple-red, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: thallus and apothecia with parietin (major), fallacinal, emodin, teloschistin and parietinic acid (minor), corresponding with chemosyndrome A of Søchting (1997).
